Even een korte bio.

Queen Elizabeth 2 sold for scrap.

One of Southampton's most ionic cruiseships, the Queen Elizabeth 2 has been sold for scrap to a Chinese for £20m. The ship left Southampton for the last time in 2008, to become a luxurious hotel in Dubai (U.A.). Cunard sold the ship to Dubai World for it to be used as a 1 000 room hotel at the Pal Jumeirah, a collection of man-made (made by a Belgian Company) in the shape of a palm tree.

The worldwide economic downturn put to pay those plans and the ship had since been moored at Port Rashid with a cost of £650,000 a month to maintain her. It has been claimed a Chinese crew of around 20 boarded the QE2 last week, replacing a crew of 40 who had been working on board.

The anchor of the QE2 has given by Cunard to Southampton, as a gift to commerate the 40 years of service the ship enjoyed from her home port.

The ship had a Royal Rendez-Vous here in our port, Zeebrugge. Together with Queen Victoria, the 19th july 2008.

Non-Cruise: Cargo ship sinking after colission on the North Sea!

A cargo ship is sinking after a colission on the North Sea. The colission happend about 100km from the coast of Rotterdam. The coast guard started immediately a rescue operation. It isn't clear of there are people in a dangerous situation.

The sinking ship is the car carrier Baltic Ace, she sails under the flag of the Bahama's. Around 19.15 o'clock, she collided in the dutch waters with the containership Corvus J, from Cyprus. The reason is unknown.

A few helicopters, 2 rescueships, 2 navyships and one pilotship are underway to the place of colission.

The Baltic Ace left Zeebrugge for Kotka (Finland), The Corvus J was underway from Grangemouth (Scotland) to Antwerp.
Place of colission is marked with a yellow flag (on the left).

Gastblogger: P. Sarazijn

Zo immens, en van zo dichtbij … never seen before!

Celebrity Reflection

CRUISE PORTS: Record cruise calls

Queen Elizabeth.
A number of ports are reporting a record year for cruise ship calls. The French port of Le Havre has had four three-ship days this year, with the final one, on 12 September, seeing the port host three German ships. Between them, Mein Schiff 2, Aidasol and Artania delivered more than 5,000 passengers to the Normandy town.
Meanwhile, Warnemünde recorded 181 calls by 40 ships and a throughput of 300,000 passengers during the year. The port had four days on which there were four ships visiting, and 14 days with three ships in port.

In 2013 the northern Spanish port of Bilbao will see something of a boost in passenger numbers when Pullmantur will sail four Heart of Europe itineraries calling at Dover, IJmuiden, Zeebrugge and Le Havre.

When Holland America Line’s Oosterdam closed the 2012 season in Juneau, Alaska on 26 September, the number of passengers that had passed through the port this year had increased again, although, at 925,000, the total was still below the 2008 peak of more than 1,000,000. Jamaica also saw significant growth from 2010 to 2011, with the number of passengers increasing from 909,000 to 1,124,000.

Special Blog: Abbreviations

Good evening!

This is a special blog to tell you something about the abbreviations in the Maritime World and the port of Zeebrugge!

What is the difference between MV, MS RMS and CS?

MV and MS

MV (Motor Vessel) or MS (Motor Ship) is a ship propelled by an internal combustion engine. The names of motor ships are often prefixed with: MS, M/S, MV, M/V.

MS Fram

 RMS

A Royal Mail Ship is a ship owned by a company that is under a postal contract. Therefore, it has to make a certain number of crossings within one year. A good example is the Queen Mary 2 (Cunard Line).
RMS Queen Mary 2

CS

CS (Club Ship) is used for passenger with the so called 'Club Concept'.This concept includes that all passengers are free to do whatever they want and are not bound to any restrictions. An example of that are the free dining oppirtunities in all of the restaurants and that there are no gala evenings.
